My Top 10 Favourite Lions

Description

Now for Part Two of my duology. While the first top 10 was on foxes, this one is going to be on lions, possibly the most attractive mammals in existence. There's so many things to love about the lion, it's big, powerful, majestic, regal, and of course, a male lion has such a luscious mane, it's no wonder the lion is referred to as the King of the Beasts. Even Bowser has a lion mane, if a short one, which adds on to his awesomeness. Well, anyway, let the countdown begin! Here's my top 10 favourite lions.

#10: Soutarou Touno (Morenatsu)
Not many people may have heard of Morenatsu, but it has a cult following. It's a bara kemono dating sim game where you pick one out of nine potential boyfriends, and Soutarou is one of them. However, when you're going with him, you're also seeing a Labrador named Kyouji Takahara, who was established to be Soutarou's senpai. It's a shame that Morenatsu would never see completion, because their story was going to be covered, and it is speculated that the best ending should you pick Soutarou and Kyouji were to result in a polyamourous threesome with them. Soutarou is a somewhat shy but playful lion who loves to play soccer, participates in a local soccer club with Kyouji, and always tries his hardest. He is very close to his senpai and looks up to him as a big brother/father figure.

#9: Lambert Lion (Lambert the Sheepish Lion)
Lambert, the Sheepish Lion
Lambert, is always trying to be a wild and woolly sheep
Lambert the Sheepish Lion!

I absolutely love this classic Disney short, having seen this as a kid, and the song is very catchy. Lambert seems to follow the same footsteps as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in that he gets scorned and ridiculed by the other lambs since he's a lion trying to act like a sheep after being mistakenly delivered to the flock by the Stork from Dumbo. He's so adorable as a cub, and still is as an adult lion, especially when he's being so timid that he never fights back when the other sheep continue to make fun of him. It wasn't until when a wolf threatens the flock and takes his adopted ewe mother that as Lambert was stricken with fear and despair, he ultimately snaps, becomes a badass and teaches the wolf a lesson, thereby gaining respect from the other sheep. Lambert is such a cutie and will remain as a part of my childhood.

#8: Alex (Madagascar)
Alex is my most favourite character of the Madagascar franchise. He's cool, suave, and holds the group together. He especially has a close friendship with Marty the Zebra, which is ironic considering the fact that zebras are preyed upon by lions in real life. Then again, there have been many odd friendships in fictional films, especially with anthropomorphic animals. Alex is also the most level-headed of the group for the most part, and also very clever when it comes to dealing with the likes of Captain Du Bois. He additionally has a family in Africa and although he wished to return to the Central Park Zoo in New York, he and his friends decide to join the Circus Zaragoza with Vitaly, Gia, and Stefano.

#7: Kovu (The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride)
Apart from Vitani, Kovu is yet another favourite character of mine from The Lion King 2. He's pretty cute as a cub and quite handsome as an adult lion much like Simba. He's essentially a sweeter version of Scar, funny enough since he was established to be Scar's heir despite having no relation to him. Zira plans to train him to overthrow Simba and use his daughter Kiara to get to him, but as Kovu develops a relationship with Simba's daughter, he realised that he can't do it and decides to abandon his mission. This leads to an upcoming war between the Pridelanders and the Outlanders, and it took Kovu and Kiara to settle the conflict and bring peace. Kovu's a compassionate and caring lion who wishes to do what he feel is right.

#6: Scar (The Lion King)
The main villain of The Lion King himself. At the start, Scar appeared as a broody lion who was bitter about Simba's birth as it means he has no chance to become the next king. He then tricks Simba into going to the elephant graveyard, and at the Be Prepared scene, it is revealed that the hyenas were his henchmen and he elaborates a scheme to be rid of both Simba and Mufasa so he can have the throne all to himself. Scar is mostly reserved and calm, but deep beneath that charming façade is a cruel, cold, and calculating mastermind who has a rather fiery disposition that surfaces when he gets angry. This makes Scar one of the most memorable and darkest Disney villains of the 90s, and also one of the coolest.

#5: Mufasa (The Lion King)
The former king of Pride Rock, Mufasa was patient, wise, benevolent, and a loving father who shared a close bond with Simba. He has several best moments, including when he takes Simba on a tour of the Pride Lands and teaches him about the ways of the Circle of Life. Another was when he saves Simba and Nala from being slaughtered by the hyenas, then lectures him about bravery, and after some playful bonding, tells him about how the stars are the Great Kings of Past watching over them and guiding them. All this makes the tragedy that follows not too long very heart-wrenching when Scar shows his true colours to his brother and throws him into the wildebeest stampede to be trampled to death. His last appearance is when he convinces the exiled adult Simba to return to Pride Rock and regain his position as king. In a nutshell, Mufasa is a noble, just, and encouraging lion who really cares for the future of his son and the kingdom.

#4: Luxray (Pokémon)
Back when Pokémon Diamond and Pearl came out, I became intrigued when I learned that one of the new Pokémon of Generation IV is a lion species in the form of Shinx, Luxio, and Luxray. An electric-type lion Pokémon, no less. When I had one on the team, I was really impressed by how well it holds out. It has the abilities Rivalry or Intimidate, has a decent moveset, and can learn a variety of moves like Thunder Fang, Ice Fang, and Fire Fang, making the Luxray family very versatile. I had a lot of fun training one, and it is one of the best Pokémon of Generation IV and now. I'd say it's right up there with Raichu, Manectric, and Zebstrika as the good Electric-type Pokémon. I prefer Luxray over the recent Litleo and Pyroar Pokémon any day.

#3: Mayor Leodore Lionheart (Zootopia)
After watching the movie Zootopia, and in addition to finding a few fanart of Mayor Lionheart, I can say that he's one of the newest additions to my favourite fictional lions. He is charismatic, tries to keep the peace of Zootopia, and is trusting and supportive of others, which made him unaware of Bellweather's treachery and plot to turn all the predator animals feral with a Night Howler serum so that she can have them locked up and take over the city. He is said to be based on Mufasa, though other sources say he is also based on adult Simba. Either way, Mayor Lionheart is one of the best characters in the movie next to Nick Wilde. Gentle, noble, courageous, and loyal, just like any other lion character should be. Not to mention he is rather charming too.

#2: Kimba (Kimba the White Lion)/Simba (The Lion King)
I know I have Simba in my Top 10 Hottest Guys list, but he still is deserving of being on this list as well, especially when I'm going to be talking about Kimba, because there is the infamous debate over Kimba vs. The Lion King. For those who are unaware, Kimba the White Lion, also known in Japan as Jungle Emperor, came out back in the 60s, and when The Lion King hit the theatres in 1994, a number of Kimba fans noticed some similarities in the movie that it has been compared very much to the anime. Some of the similarities include scenes of the lion standing on a rock, the apparition of the dead father talking to the son, characters like a villainous relative who plans to usurp the throne, a group of moronic hyenas as the followers of the villain, a comical duo, a wise mandrill monkey, and of course, who can forget the names of the main characters Kimba and Simba? To be fair, Kimba is called Leo in Japan, and let's not forget that both Kimba and The Lion King were inspired from Bambi (in addition to The Lion King also taking cues from Moses and especially Hamlet). But enough of that, both Kimba and Simba are courageous lions who were adorable yet cheeky and fussy little cubs who love adventure, then they grow up into mature and brave adult lions who learn the importance of taking responsibility. Hence, they deserve their respected #2 spot.

#1: Leomon (Digimon)
This is yet another character who I have listed in my Top 10 Hottest Guys that deserves to be mentioned here as well. Leomon sadly gets killed off in every incarnation of Digimon, though hopefully he won't be in the new Digimon Adventure Tri series (UPDATE: he gets killed, as usual... :(). He is a noble and powerful warrior who fights for the good and well-being of the Digimon and has a long-standing rivalry with Ogremon, at least in the Digimon Adventure series. The most memorable incarnation of Leomon is of course the one in Tamers where he becomes partners with Jeri, one of the young human protagonists of the series. It was most unfortunate that it didn't last long when he dies at the hands of Beelzemon when he tries to reason with him to stop his intention to harm the children and the other Digimon. Leomon can best be described as a mighty, brave lion who doesn't care if he's putting his own life in danger as long as the innocent are safe. He is also a prominent icon in the bara kemono fandom, which is understandable because just by looking at him, he is such a stud. He is a cute, sexy, huggable presence whose hotness rivals that of Bowser, though that's another story for another day. Anyone who wants to know more about how hot and sexy Leomon is, you can check out my Top 10 Hottest Guys list. I can say for certain that he is a very handsome hunk, which does fit lions quite well.

Honourable Mentions
Prince John and King Richard (Robin Hood)
Lippy the Lion (Lippy the Lion & Hardy Har Har)
The Cowardly Lion (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)
Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia)
Leo the Lion (Metro Goldwyn Mayer)

And that's about it. That concludes my top 10 duology. I have them in conjunction cause even though foxes and lions are biologically incompatible, they actually go well like bread and butter in a fictional setting. Hope you all have enjoyed it. Zootopia is definitely a must-see if you're a furry or just love anthropomorphic animals in general. Take care, and see you again next time.

Mayor Lionheart acted like he only wanted what was best for the city and to maintain peace, but he fails to see and understand when his own actions of abuse toward Bellwether make him blind to such things, even his own screw ups, still trying to look like a victim in the end who did nothing wrong.
